We took our families out to the wedding site when Leah was home over the 4th of July weekend. We are getting married in the woods on my family’s property.

Leah and I went into the woods to scope out a wedding site back in March. We found a nice spot and a couple of hours later, my dad brought the back-ho and cleared the area.

The two trees shown here are going to be the “front” of the ceremony site where we and our wedding party will stand. There will be some kind of platform. I’m thinking of making a raised and terraced stage-like landscaped stage. My dad and I have talked about using landscaping rocks for this project.

Hopefully, we will plant grass sometimes soon. We have a slight fear of deer eating the new grass, but I suppose that only time will tell. We are also slightly concerned about bugs. To approach this problem, we will have my grandpa spray for bugs a couple of days before the wedding.

Both of our moms love to garden, and they are in charge of all that is flowers. They will probably transplant some ferns that my mom and I found in the woods near the wedding area.  To prevent deer from eating the plants, we will probably use a lot of potted flowers We aren’t sticking with a specific color of flowers, so it should look pretty cool.

A few years ago, my dad went to an auction and bought three large stained glass windows that had come from a church somewhere in Europe. The windows are over 165 years old and are really pretty. Although they are old, all the original glass is still intact.

This is one of the windows… Whichever one we choose, it will need a good power wash!

There are also some smaller, frosted glass windows. They are a yellow/brownish color. We may use those to decorate the woods as well. At least one of them will be used to create a table for the front of the ceremony.

Anyone know the credit for this photo?

For seating, we were inspired by this photo. Because we are having a relatively large wedding (between 300 and 350 guests), rental costs and logistics started to become a bit of an issue. Chairs in the woods would probably sink, and there would be some trouble getting them back to the wedding site.

Straw bales are a perfect solution! I live on a farm, and we’ve baled hay for years. Dad is going to plant wheat next year, so they will actually be straw bales and will hopefully be better for those with allergies.

Everything is starting to come together. There are a lot of little things that we have yet to think about, but we have a year to get those taken care of. We are excited about our location because it will bring a mood to the wedding that will not be easily duplicated. Keep watch for more details on our planning!

Today is the one year mark. We will be getting married July 16, 2011!

Update: Just kidding. Date changed to June 25, 2011!

In addition to my handsome and amazing fiancé David, I kind of love Dave Barnes. He is a musician from Nashville, and his fan base has seen a lot of growth in the past few years. His lyrics are so poetic and beautiful. (David also loves some Dave. He’s learned quite a few of his songs and often serenades me on the guitar.) David and I have both gotten to see Dave Barnes perform live at separate times.

As of the moment, we are leaning towards his song “Amen” off his latest album.

I played this song for my mom a while ago and told her we were considering it for our first dance. She started crying when she heard the last line of the first stanza!

Here are the lyrics:

We will have love, we will have pain
There will be days and days and days that feel the same
We will have fear, we will have joy
There may be little girls and little boys

We will have friends, we will have peace
There will be nights of lights and music ’til you sleep
We will be strong, but we will still break
We’ll live through so much more than we can take

Amen, Amen
With the dawn, we all begin again
Amen, Amen
What is done and yet to come, Amen

We will have hope, we will have doubt
There will be memories we could never live without
We will have tears, but there will be grace
There will be prayers that we never thought we’d pray

Amen, Amen
With the dawn, we all begin again
Amen, Amen
What is done and yet to come, Amen

In the sun or the storms, the flood or the flames
When everything’s wrong, and I’m the one to blame
In heartache or hope
I swear I’ll say, I’ll say

Amen, Amen
With the dawn, we all begin again
Amen, Amen
What is done and yet to come, Amen

What do you think? Do you have any other first dance song suggestions? What was your first dance song?

I was so excited to go home for the long holiday weekend! It was great to see family, friends, and of course my wonderful fiancé. We got to show everyone the wedding site and brain storm some fun decorating ideas. I’ll let David tell more about that later. But one really nice surprise was that I was able to go dress shopping for the first time!

My mom, sister, my aunt, cousin, and I met for lunch and afterwards we all went to David’s Bridal. I had spent some time looking at dresses online and in magazines. All of the dresses that caught my eye were of a similar style, but I knew I needed to try them on before I knew what type of dresses would be best for me. (I can’t go too far into details because David will read this!)

We spent about two hours in the shop – a lot longer than I thought we would. I tried on between 7 and 10 dresses. Let me say… I am not sure how anyone says “yes” to the dress!

Perhaps part of that was because I didn’t find “THE” one. Of all the dresses, I narrowed it down to 3 that I liked the best. Most of it was liking this part of this dress, and that part of that dress, the fit of this one, the detailing on that one. And even though the wedding is still a year out, I felt a little pressure. How would I know that a dress is THE ONE? What if I’m not like other people and have THAT MOMENT? Do people actually have THAT MOMENT, or is that just on TV? What if I really like it but David would like a different dress better?

Another thing – holy cow, every dress at David’s Bridal has a 50 foot long train. I suppose part of that might be because I’m only 5’1″ and about a foot would have to come off the length of the dress anyways. Then again, I’ve never worn a dress with a train before!

I don’t think I found “THE” dress that day, but I have plenty of time! I may go again in August, and if not then, most definitely in November.

Any advice for wedding dress shopping round 2?

So we have to admit – David and I are both photography snobs. I am a graphic designer, and David has taken photography classes. We’ve poured over countless websites, relishing in and critiquing wedding photography.

Because I love it so much, photography was the very first thing I started to look at when I began wedding planning three months ago. I found out very quickly we had really expensive taste. I also discovered many of the photographers we liked were already booked – more than a year out! On top of all of that, I was looking for two photographers. One in Virginia for our engagement photos and one in Michigan for the wedding. I sent out a LOT of emails.

You know those budget allowance and percentage infographs that are featured in bride magazines? Nearly all of the pricing we received was way, way off from what David and I estimated our budget would be. I was a little worried. But, I had a great talk with my mom. She told me we need to prioritize what is most important to us on our wedding day. (Other than, of course, getting married to each other and being surrounded by friends and family!) She said that we can put a little more money into the things we want the most, and budget more carefully in details we’re aren’t as concerned about.

And so, the PERFECT photographers fell into our lap!

Our engagement photographer in Virginia is DuckDuck Collective. They don’t usually do engagement sessions, but David is friends with a family member of one of the photographers. Their work is absolutely amazing – just check out the photography on their website and blog! Not only that, but they’ve done work for Levi Strauss, Relevant Magazine, and Zondervan, among other big names. We adore their use of lighting and can’t wait for our shoot at the end of August!

Our Michigan wedding day photographer is Jenn Dean Photography, a husband and wife duo! They, too, are fabulous. We love their mix of photojournalism and that touch of vintage vibe. Because our wedding is going to be in the woods, we wanted a photographer that could truly capture our unique venue in a special way. Check out this gallery on their website of ring photos – love!

We will be sure to post photos once we get them!  :)

Hello everyone!

I know, I know. It’s like David and I dropped off the face of the blogosphere. It’s been a busy past 3 and a half months – I moved to Virginia and started my new job! It’s been great being in the same town as David. (Even though he’s back home in Michigan for the summer. Which is rather ironic, but no big deal for us. We are seasoned long-distancers!)

And, of course, the wedding planning has been set into motion. I’ve decided to blog our wedding planning process!

There is a lot to recap, but here’s an overview of what we have thus far:

  • A wedding date: July 16, 2011! That gives us 16 months to plan.
  • A wedding location: David’s parent’s woods. If you read the blog before I knew about its existence, you know David proposed to me in the woods in an abandoned cabin. His family owns a lot of land and taps maple trees for syrup. Anyways, we took one of the farm vehicles back into the woods, found a great spot, and next thing I knew David’s dad was back there with the back-ho clearing away all the dead trees and brush! I can’t wait to tell you more about our plans for our clearing in the woods.
  • A reception location: David’s parent’s front lawn. Which will require lots of rentals!
  • Engagement photographer in Virginia: EEEEK! :)  There will be a whole post on photographers.
  • Wedding photographer in Michigan: Huge sigh of relief. Again, more commentary to come about photographers.
  • Guest List Round 1: We’re looking between 300 – 350 at the moment. David’s family is HUGE. His dad’s side is the size of my entire list. Lots to tell about this process!
  • A wedding theme: Think vintage country… or something like that. It demands an explanation, we know.

Wow! After listing what we’ve done, I am feeling pretty good! We are trying our hardest not to let wedding planning be a stressful process, but rather something that is fun to be enjoyed.

We hope you’ll follow us in the journey of planning our big day. We’re absolutely interested in your feedback and suggestions!

–Leah

David and LeahHello all!

Girl here – Leah, to be more specific. It feels a little strange to be writing to people who know all of the secrets behind my engagement! Boy (David) says you want to hear my side of the story. Wow, where to begin!?

I’ll start off by saying March 12th was a hectic morning and afternoon. I had decided to accept a job offer. An hour later, I was presented with a counter offer from another company. There was much debate and several phone calls to family, mentors, and a boyfriend who was “in between classes and work.” My heart was racing, and I was pacing all around the house. It was a very difficult decision because they were both great opportunities. I ended up taking the second offer, which puts me in the same town as David. David called me even though he was at “work” to tell me how excited he was I took the job near him. He wasn’t able to talk for long, but I figured we’d talk later that night.

We were invited earlier in the week by David’s mom to see one of David’s four younger brothers perform in his high school musical. I didn’t find it strange she invited us; we had gone to several shows and thought it was cool we could attend opening night. I figured I’d see it again with David the second weekend of the show. After my mom got home from work, she, my younger sister, and I headed out to Vermontville for the show. We got there earlier than David’s family, but were able to chat a little once they arrived before the show began.

The show was fun, and I texted David after the show to let him know Joe did a great job. We had also been invited to go back to David’s house for brownies after the show, so we headed there next.

When we got to the house, I decided to leave my purse in the car. My mom asked if I wanted to bring in my camera. I declined and said it I didn’t need to. She told me it would be nice to get a picture of Joe and everyone, and I’d never know when I’d see the grandparents next.  “Whatever,” I thought, and took in my purse.

David’s grandparents had come to the show and were at the house as well. After we all got inside, David’s mom asked Benny, the youngest of David’s brothers, if he would take me out to the sugar shanty to get some fresh maple syrup for the brownies. (David’s family has a maple syrup business.) Benny was busy playing piano, but David’s mom said, “Benny, would you pleeeease take Leah out?” He got up and led the way out to the shanty.

The shanty is a new addition to the farm, and I figured they had finished out the inside of it. It was very muddy because of all the snowmelt and rain in Michigan, so Benny and I walked on the planks of wood out to the shanty. When we got near the door, I saw Joe on the gator. He patted the seat next to him for me to get on. “I guess they want me to come in from the back side to see what they’ve done,” I thought. Joe and I got stuck in the mud, and his dad had to come push us out. Instead of going around to the back of the shanty, he took me out it into one of the fields. It was wet and cold and rainy, and I wasn’t sure what to think. The thought of a proposal flashed briefly in my mind, but I dismissed it. David was in Virginia.

Ahead, a light was blinking in the dark. There was another piece of farm equipment sitting in the field. David’s second youngest brother, Sam, was sitting in it with the hood of his sweatshirt up.  Joe got out and had me get on his back to transfer me to Sam’s vehicle. The ride was very bumpy and loud. Sam didn’t say anything to me and I didn’t ask any questions. “If this is a proposal, it’s too bad Daniel couldn’t be here,” I thought. He was on vacation in the Carolinas.

Sam brought me through the muddy field to the edge of one of the woods. There was another light, and there was Daniel with a lantern. So if Daniel was home, then that meant that David –

I got out of the vehicle and Daniel told me to follow him and where to step so I wouldn’t get too muddy. He began to lead me into the woods.

“So, no spring break at the beach?” I asked him.

“Um, no. I had some homework to do,” he told me.

Decorations

As we walked further into the woods, I saw a cabin dimly lit by candles and lanterns.

“Go in there, and walk through slowly,” Daniel told me.

By this point, I was excited and was still trying to figure out how David had gotten to Michigan. I entered the cabin and saw all the work he had done. The cabin had two rooms. The first room was decorated with a picture I had painted of the two of us and given to David for one Christmas. There was also a Jones Soda bottle with our picture David had given me before we had started dating. There were wine glasses with votive candles all around.

Painting and Jones

Pictures of the two of us from the past three years were tacked above and around the doorway leading into the second room. There was also a table with two chairs, a white tablecloth, candles, chocolates, two glasses, and sparkling grape juice set up. As I entered into the second part of the house, David stepped out from the corner. I jumped into his arms to give him a hug.

The next part is kind of a blur and I don’t remember it all. I gave him a hug and he took my hands. I just wanted to look at him and talk to him. I was still so surprised he was home already. I kept holding his hands, but he was trying to get them loose. He reached his hand into his sweatshirt and pulled out a little gray box. Then he got down on one knee.

“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Leah Joy Faust, will you marry me?” is all I remember him saying.

And I said, “Yes!”

Table

We ate the dessert, drank some bubbly, and then called Sam to come pick us up on one of the farm vehicles. As we headed back to the house, we heard what we thought were fireworks going off and cheering. (They were bottle rockets!)

We got back to the house, and David said we should probably go through the front door. We knocked and opened the door, and a large group of our friends and family came out to greet us. I had no idea everyone was there! They had parked their cars at David’s aunt’s house next door and had been hiding in the basement the whole time. A ton of camera flashes went off and there were a lot of hugs and oohing and ahhing over the ring after that!

David pulled me over to the computer because he wanted to show me something. Someone yelled, “It’s not official till it’s facebook official!” So, we made it officially official. And then David brought up the blog.

It was just one surprise after another that night! David told me he had been blogging during the days before the proposal and showed that he had a lot of visits to the blog. I was so shocked! He posted that I said yes, and told me we could read the blog later. Let me tell you, I loved it! It was so special to be able to read what he had been doing and his thought process. It really emphasized how much he cared and loves me. I loved reading about all the planning that went into our special night.

The picture we left up

The rest of the evening was filled with dessert (David had brought home a fancy chocolate dessert from the gourmet restaurant where he works) and fun times with friends and family.

A few days later, we went back to the cabin to take pictures and clean up the decorations. We left one picture of us, the one that I had painted, on the doorframe.

We are so excited for this special time in our lives and are planning a July 2011 wedding!

God’s hand was so present throughout the whole day. From the job to the proposal, the timing could not have been more perfect!

I’m engaged to Leah Joy Faust! Keep watch for Girl’s version of the story and a little recap from your’s truly.  -David Benedict

Today is the day. The day that I will ask Girl to marry me. I just woke up from sleeping in. I was going to get up early, but I really needed the sleep. I’m about to go out and get the cabin ready. I have to do a little sweeping and a few other things. However, how Girl gets to the cabin is still up in the air.

Originally, I had thought that my mom could take Girl back to the woods to check the Maple Trees. However, it is quite muddy here and we have to use an ATV to get out to the cabin. The ATV has a cab, so girl wouldn’t get muddy, but that’ll throw an interesting factor into the mix. Last night, my mom had a great idea. Her idea was that my brothers could do a “Girl relay.” Going from youngest to oldest, my brothers would take her from one brother to the next, until she ended with me. I like this idea because it give my brothers a chance to be involved.

I’m sure there are a few more minor things that could change throughout the day. However, the only thing that matters by the end of the night, is that she knows that I love her and that I want to spend the rest of my life with her.

Tomorrow I propose to Girl. It doesn’t even seem real. This is something I’ve been anticipating for a long time. In under 24 hours, I could be engaged.

After a long trip, I got home today around 5 pm. It was good to see my family and tell my little bros the news. I think we’ve decided not to tell the 7 year old bro until after the proposal, in case of a slip up. I’m pretty excited and have been busy getting things around.

Tonight, me and my 14 year old brother went out to the cabin and started cleaning it up. It is quite rustic, to say the least, and I have my work cut out for me tomorrow. I’m not sure if I will do the fireplace. We tried the one already in the cabin and it smoked us out. I think I’m just gonna stick with candles and a lantern.

For the dessert, I have decided it would be best to eat that back at the house since there is no electricity in the cabin. Instead I have readied some chocolates to have on a little plate for girl and I to share. I also have some bubbly juice for us to drink.

Tonight I was able to have dinner and go shopping with my mom. It was good to get to talk with her and brainstorm about logistics. I had  a lot of fun.

Tomorrow I have to finish cleaning the cabin, bring out a table and chairs, set up the candles, set up the pictures, organize logistics, and a whole lot more. I am exhausted and can’t wait to head to bed. I need the sleep, so I can be up late tomorrow night celebrating!
